LIBRARY OF SOCIAL SCIENCE BOOK EXHIBITS

Book Exhibit Report:

2008 Annual Convention of the Texas Psychological
Association: “Maturing as a Profession”
November 20-22, 2008, Austin, TX

With the theme, “Maturing as a Profession,” the Texas Psychological Association’s Annual Convention took place at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Austin, Texas, from Thursday, November 20 through Saturday, November 22, 2008. The LIBRARY OF SOCIAL SCIENCE BOOK EXHIBIT opened on Thursday at 7:00 AM and closed on Saturday at 4:00 PM.

Nearly 500 people attended the conference. These professionals— psychologists, diagnosticians, therapists, counselors and social workers—came from all across Texas.

There were over 30 vendors representing various aspects of the practice of psychology, including diagnostics, insurance, office-visit management, etc. Two publishers, John Wiley & Sons and Pearson Education, sent their own representatives.

The LIBRARY OF SOCIAL SCIENCE BOOK EXHIBIT was a major contributor to the success of the conference. Located at the heart of the meeting—next to coffee breaks and registration—our exhibit had constant traffic from attendees wanting to see the latest publications on diagnostics, forensic psychology, binational and multicultural issues, child and adolescent development, mental retardation and developmental disabilities, aging, psychopharmacology, social justice issues, certification and legal concerns.

Associate Director Mei Ha Chan

Over 30 publishers participated in the book exhibit, sending books and promotional materials. Our display contained more than 300 titles—an exciting, comprehensive collections of books on psychology and its practice from the major publishers in the field.

The depth of our selection of books stimulated attendees to return repeatedly to our exhibit. We actively distributed publisher order forms, catalogues, adoption request forms and promotional materials to conference attendees throughout the meeting. Many indicated that they would use the order forms we distributed to obtain their books through Amazon.com, or the publisher’s website at a later time.

The LIBRARY OF SOCIAL SCIENCE exhibit was staffed by our professional on-site managers Mei Ha Chan and Richard Klein. This was the first time we organized a book exhibit for the Texas Psychological Association, and attendees frequently complimented us on the wide range of books and journals on display.

One of the keynote speakers, Dr. Judith Beck, stopped by the book exhibit after her standing-room-only presentation to sign copies of her books and answer questions from people who had just heard her speak. The 2 titles from Guilford publishing on cognitive psychology completely sold out and the 2 titles from Oxmoor House Publishing on weight loss and diet solution sold very well.

Our TEXTBOOKS FOR ADOPTION table attracted the attention of psychologists looking for texts and supplementary reading material for their courses on counseling, psychotherapy and diagnostics. Textbooks from Worth Publishers and Open University Press were well received.

MONOGRAPHS from APA, Bayou Publishing, Guilford Press, Harvard University Press, Johns Hopkins University Press, New Harbinger, Oxford University Press, Prometheus, Routledge and Springer, among others, attracted a lot of attention from attendees.

Many conference attendees complimented us on our display of 30 titles from Hogrefe and Huber Publishers in Germany. The attendees exclaimed that they had never before been aware of this publisher and that they were seeing these monographs at our book exhibit for the very first time.

Since the book exhibit at the Texas Psychological Association was our last for 2008, we are very pleased at the “heads up” responses from both the attendees and publishers at this conference.
