LIBRARY OF SOCIAL SCIENCE BOOK EXHIBITS

Book Exhibit Report:

17th Annual ASIANetwork Conference:
“Asia Changing/Changing Asia”
March 13-15, 2009, Lisle, Illinois

With the theme, “Asia Changing/Changing Asia,” the 17th Annual ASIANetwork Conference took place at the Marriot Hickory Ridge Conference Hotel in Lisle, Illinois from Friday, March 13th through Sunday, March 15, 2009. The LIBRARY OF SOCIAL SCIENCE BOOK EXHIBIT was open throughout the conference staffed by our professional on-site manager, Richard Klein.

Scholars and educators from the fields of history, anthropology, sociology, religion, political science, philosophy and economics came from all over the United States and from as far away as Japan, Korea, and China.

The LIBRARY OF SOCIAL SCIENCE BOOK EXHIBIT was a major contributor to the overall success of the conference. Located at the heart of the meeting—next to the plenary sessions—our exhibit had constant traffic from attendees wanting to see the latest publications on Asian Studies.

Over 30 publishers participated in the book exhibit sending books, journals and promotional materials. Our display contained more than 200 titles—an exciting, comprehensive collections of books on Asian Studies from the major publishers in the field.

We actively distributed publisher order forms, catalogues, adoption request forms and promotional materials throughout the meeting, many of whom indicated that they would use the forms to order through Amazon.com or the publisher’s website. Others mentioned that they would  submit forms to their acquisition librarian. The depth of our selection of books encouraged attendees to return to take a second and third look at our display.

On Saturday night—after a live performance of two Japanese Kyogen plays—the LIBRARY OF SOCIAL SCIENCE held a raffle for a soon to be released five volume set of the Berkshire Encyclopedia of China.  The author, Cathy Bao Bean, was on hand to autograph copies of her two books and chat with attendees.

MONOGRAPHS from the Association for Asian Studies, Berkshire Publishing Group, Berghahn Books, Cambridge Scholars Press, Cheng & Tsui Publishers, Cornell E. Asian Studies, International Specialized Book Services, Rodopi Press, Stanford University Press and Trans Pacific Press, among others, attracted great attention.

The LIBRARY OF SOCIAL SCIENCE will be organizing the next ASIANetwork book exhibit  at their meeting next year, April 9-11, 2009 in Atlanta, Georgia. Please reserve a space on your calendar for this important event.
