Dear Colleague,

Michael Vlahos, Professor at the United States Naval War College, conceives of warfare as a sacred ritual that shapes collective identity. Battle, he claims, marks the sacrifice, and so battle itself (as Lincoln declared) is “hallowed ground.” But the essence of American nationalism is found in its war cemeteries and Memorial Day, because the sacrifice of the pure, the pious, the young is the moment of transcendence for American identity.

Fighting Identity—along with books such as Blood Sacrifice and the Nation (Carolyn Marvin), Sacred Violence (Paul Kahn) and Nations have the Right to Kill (Richard Koenigsberg)—puts forth the view that warfare is a “liturgy of sacred identity”: a sacrificial ritual.

What are the implications of this view of warfare as a narrative of blood sacrifice for our understanding of history and culture, and for the emerging discipline of Critical Security Studies?
