Report on the 10th Anniversary Conference and Book Exhibit of the International Association for Relational Psychoanalysis & Psychotherapy (IARPP) • March 1–4 • New York, NY

The IARPP Conference and Book Exhibit were a huge success. Taking place in the heart of Manhattan at the Roosevelt Hotel (Madison Avenue & 45th Street), this dynamic meeting attracted nearly 800 practitioners and was truly international, with large contingents from Israel, Chile, Norway, Germany, England, Italy and France—and of course from throughout the United States.

The IARPP conference celebrated its 10th anniversary with a concentrated tribute to the ideas and prolific writings of Stephen Mitchell. The 2012 meeting considered in depth Stephen’s theoretical and clinical contributions alongside his legacy: How his ideas have been developed.

The LSS Book Exhibit consisted of 305 titles—from 49 publishers who sent books for the display.
Our exhibit was set up along both sides of the foyer hallway (a typical LSS configuration).

Between sessions, conference attendees crowd around the book exhibit. Getting ready to go back to sessions: They had to ring a bell and turn lights on and off to pull people away from the books.
The exhibit was located just outside the Grand Ballroom (where Plenary sessions were held). Attendees often complimented us on the size and scope of our exhibit—and expressed their appreciation. Peter Shabad with his book Despair and the Return of Hope. It took several tries for photographer and on-site manager Richard Klein to get Peter to smile—lifting him out of his despair.

Barry Magid self-published his book Freud's
Case Studies after it went out of print with Routledge. He paid the exhibit fee himself—and sold quite a few copies.

Philip Gensler, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist and prominent author, poses with his Relational Child Psychotherapy, published by Rowman & Littlefield/Jason Aronson.
