Reflecting on hundreds of thousands of British casualties that occurred at the Battle of the Somme (July 1, 1916-March 21, 1917), British General Douglas Haig wrote (De Groot, 1989):
- Credit must be paid to the splendid young officers who were able time and time again to attack these tremendous positions. To many it meant certain death, and all must have known that before they started.
CERTAIN DEATH.
"A suicide attack (Wikipedia) is any violent attack in which the attacker accepts their own death as a direct result of the method used to harm, damage or destroy the target."
The First World War: an endless series of suicide attacks, day after day, week after week, year after year: 6000 deaths per day.
The First World War: The most monumental suicide operation in human history.
