The Slaughter of Young Men
Richard Koenigsberg |
There is a website, Reflections, that publishes a statement made by me (along with statements by two of my deceased colleagues):
"A billion words; the endless chatter. Yet, at the core of civilization, a deep pathology: The slaughter of young men." Richard A. Koenigsberg
We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit.
--- Aristotle
Distrust everyone in whom the impulse to punish is powerful.-- Friedrich Nietzsche

I don't know when I said this. But of course it's true. We don't often think of young men (soldiers) when we think about "oppression."
But no class of people has suffered more at the hands of societies and nation-states than young men. In the history of civilization (East and West), millions upon millions of soldiers have been slaughtered.
The photo to the right is a crystallization of what a battlefield looks like at the end of a war. Men are victims--abject, pathetic...dead. And yet some people think of war and battle as a manifestation of "masculinity" and "male aggression." Why is this the case?
