Americans are now living within a gigantic fantasy: a dream that everyone is having at the same time. The Matrix.
This dream or fantasy is based on the equation of one's own body with the national body.
Geographic space is conceived in corporial terms. The nation--like a human body--seeks to secure its boundaries.
"Walls" represent the national immune system: Alien, not-self organisms are imagined to be invading the body politic. They must not be allowed to penetrate. To some, it seems oh so real: the experience of human beings as pathogenic organisms.
Immigrants are as if invaders—creeping through porous boundaries—threatening the vulnerable self. National "policy" grows out of this psychosomatic fantasy.
It's not that the "political becomes the personal." Rather, precisely the opposite: the personal become the political. The human body is projected outward, shaping our experience of the world. The nation becomes our own body.
