How the Coronavirus enables us to
Awaken from the Nightmare of History

Politics consists of a series of phantasmagoria: imaginary, symbolic danger that elicit social movements--such as war and genocide. The staples of "history."

Viruses are real dangers. No need to worry about Mexican rapists, Islamic radicals, Iranian atom bombs, North Korean atom bombs, immigrants creeping through a hole in our wall: the conglomeration of "enemies" that provide sexual excitement on a daily basis. Out to lunch, that bunch.

Viruses have no interest in political boundaries or political categories. It's an excellent time to abandon our precious paranoid fantasies; the imaginary "enemies" we need so desperately. No need to build weapons. Out to lunch that bunch.

Awakening from the nightmare of history: returning to the reality of our biological nature. No need to kill anyone. Just avoid breathing in vapors from the lungs of another (possibly infected) human being.

“Koenigsberg’s ideas cut trenchantly through conventional, rationalized notions about culture, the nation, and war, and enable us to see through the psychic machinations of human institutions in utterly new ways.”
