The concept of "embodiment," which by now has become a dominant theme in academia, was not initiated within academia. Rather, the embodiment revolution occurred in popular culture, manifesting in the late Seventies (1977-1981) as the running revolution, the body-building revolution, and disco.
It culminated with a song by Olivia Newton-John, Let's Get Physical, released on September 28, 1981. Billboard ranked "Physical" number six on its All Time Top 100,[15] number one on its Top 50 Sexiest Songs of All Time, and number one on its Top 100 Songs of the 1980s list. The essence of the song is contained within the following few lines (complete lyrics are below):
"Let's get physical, physical,
I wanna get physical.
Let's get into physical.
"Let me hear your body talk, your body talk.
Let me hear your body talk."
The idea is that the body has a mind of its own; human beings talk or speak through their bodies. This idea is consist with my methodology of "metaphor analysis," which consists of identifying bodily terms within political rhetoric. Embodied metaphors, I demonstrate, reveal the presence of the body within abstract terms. Metaphors reveal the bodily phantasies that are the source of ideology.
My methodology and theory contradicts hegemonic theorists such as Lacan, who priotizes "language" as an independent source of reality. I view language as a dependent variable, conveying or articulating phantasy. Metaphors reveal unconscious phantasies contained within political texts. No matter how abstract the language may appear to be, the leader who creates an ideology is saying or telling us something about his own body.
The best (and sexiest) video by far of Olivia singing this song is here (make sure you save it, there are many inferior versions). The Wikipedia page about the song is here. The complete lyrics are directly below.
Let's Get Physical (complete lyrics).
I'm sayin' all the things that I know you'll like,
Makin' good conversation.
I gotta handle you just right,
You know what I mean.
I took you to an intimate restaurant,
Then to a suggestive movie.
There's nothing left to talk about
'Less it's horizontally.
Let's get physical, physical,
I wanna get physical.
Let's get into physical.
Let me hear your body talk, your body talk.
Let me hear your body talk.
Let's get physical, physical,
I wanna get physical.
Let's get into physical.
Let me hear your body talk, your body talk.
Let me hear your body talk.
I've been patient, I've been good,
Try'n to keep my hands on the table.
It's gettin' hard this holdin' back,
You know what I mean.
I'm sure you'll understand my point of view,
We know each other mentally.
