The current situation in American politics and culture has the characteristics of a psychosis. It's a shared psychosis in which many of the population participates (except, perhaps, some of the people--happily oblivious-- wandering around "the mall").
The important people in society are immersed in this shared psychosis. It's almost a requirement.
Those with the most severe psychotic delusions dominate the narrative. They are the loudest and most assertive.
Then, there is the other side of the coin: relatively sane people--commentators, etc.--whose main job (the source of their identity) is to dispute or argue against the psychotic narrative.
To do their job, they have to participate in the shared psychosis: to be deeply immersed within it.
People throw around words like "insane" and "crazy"--because it feels that way. Actually, the best word is PSYCHOSIS (which means the same thing, doesn't it?).
