Political violence revolves around destroying doubt: disbelief in one's own god, nation or ideology. The "other" symbolizes split off skepticism within the mind of the believer. One's own belief that one's own god, nation or ideology may not be true or omnipotent--is projected into a class of people that symbolizes doubt or disbelief--the disavowed part of oneself.
