War lies at the beginning of--and is the essence of-- civilization. Warfare is the ultimate "social activity," bringing together massive numbers of human beings to kill and die (in the name of a sacred ideal). The proof of the pudding is in the dying and killing. This is how we know that society or civilization exists.
