Members of one group try to kill members of another group who don’t worship the same sacred object that their own group worships. More precisely, members of each nation-state try to prove the “truth” their own sacred object by dying for it.

Death is the objective. The proof of the pudding is in the dying. Two-hundred-million dead as a result of war and genocide in the Twentieth Century.  “Bow down to my sacred object or we will kill you.” Or: “Die for my sacred object as I am willing to die for my sacred object.”
