- Hitler’s Body and the Body Politic: the Psychosomatic Source of Culture. Through systematic analysis of images and metaphors, I identify the deep structure of ideologies. Images and metaphors contained within Hitler’s writings and speeches, reveals that his ideology revolved around a fantasy about the German body politic. The Nazi movement enacted this bodily fantasy.
- Hitler's Holocaust: The Logic of War and Genocide (an e-book). Nazi ideology glorified sacrificial death. Hitler believed that the highest virtue was willingness to die for one's country. Jews on the other hand, Hitler claimed, were a people incapable of sacrificing for a national community. Distilling twenty-five years of research, this e-book reveals the logic that generated mass-murder.
Hitler imagined Jews had shirked their duty to fight and die in the First World War. In the Second World War, things would be different. German soldiers again would die for their country. This time, however, Jews would not evade the duty to "lay down their lives." They too would be required to die for Germany. Hitler reasoned that if he had no compunctions about sending the "best" men--German soldiers--to die on the field of battle, why would he hesitate to require the deaths of Jews--mortal enemies of the German people.
- Hitler, Lenin—and the Desire to Destroy “Parasites:” The revolutionary objectives of Hitler and Lenin were identical: to remove or cut out the source of a deadly disease present within the body politic. Violent political acts were necessary and unavoidable. If the cause of the disease within the body of the people was not eliminated or destroyed, the nation would die.
- Hitler, War—and the Holocaust: Hitler created the Holocaust based on his understanding of war as the occasion when nations sacrifice their soldiers. If Hitler could ask his own soldiers to sacrifice their lives, why couldn’t he require that Jews die s well?
Hitler declared: “If I don’t mind sending the pick of the German people into the hell of war without the slightest regret for the spilling of precious German blood, then I naturally also have the right to eliminate millions of an inferior race that breeds like vermin.” The Holocaust grew out of Hitler’s insight into the nature of warfare. If national leaders have the right to order their own soldiers to die, why could a national leader not also have the right to also send a his nation's mortal enemies to their deaths? The logic of the Holocaust followed based on the logic of warfare
- In Life Against Death: The Psychoanalytic Interpretation of History (1959/1985), Norman O. Brown stated that his objective was to reshape psychoanalysis into a “wider general theory of human nature, culture and history” to be appropriated by the “consciousness of mankind as a new stage in the historical process of man’s coming to know himself.” Building on Brown, my project is to “make conscious the unconscious on the stage of social reality” in order to “awakening from the nightmare of history.” What would it mean to develop a psychoanalytic theory of external reality? What is the relationship between unconscious fantasy and the outer world?
- Ideology, Metaphor and Unconscious Fantasy: Ideologies contain and articulate psychological meanings. How is it possible to decipher the latent meaning of ideological texts? My method, analysis of metaphor, consists of identifying recurring images and figures of speech in the writings and speeches of individuals who have been significant in defining and promulgating ideologies. Through this method, I reveal the fantasies that the ideology seeks to express.
