According to Hozumi's social theory, the individual was born into society & exists only in society. Thus, the individual exists for the society & society for the individual. The Western clash between individualism & socialism is brought to rest by his concept of godo seizon (fusion or amalgamated existence, the merger of the individual into society). Society thus was composed of merged individuals.
The ideal person was one who had this desire for total assimilation into the society, which was a higher organic totality. Hozumi had a special term for this: kodoshin, the desire for two or more independent elements to become one. The purpose of all ethics and morality was to direct the individual to kodoshin, to acquire the desire to submerge the self into the social totality.
