"Hitler stated that civilization arose out of the willingness to "renounce personal interest to sacrifice the life of the individual in favor of the large group.”
Freud's view was similar: Civilization required renunciation on the part of individuals in the name of the group (in Civilization and its Discontent).
What is the relationship between these two ideas? How does the renunciation of libidinal gratification relate to the renunciation of one's life or existence?
