Psychosis and Politics
Richard Koenigsberg

The time is ripe to use the term PSYCHOSIS to describe events that once had been taken for granted as "normal" elements of the historical process. These events may be characterized as the "normality of psychopathology," or more radically the fact that PSYCHOTIC PROCESSES characterize certain historical events or phenomena.

Read the passage below by Patrick Pearse--founder of the Irish Revolutionary movement, and the statistics directly below--and decide for yourself. Is my use of the term "psychosis" inappropriate?

The last sixteen months have been the most glorious in the history of Europe. Heroism has come back to the earth. It is good for the world to be warmed with the red wine of the battlefield. Such august homage was never before offered to God as this—the homage of millions of lives given gladly for love of country.
