Three of today's most exciting thinkers engaged in an animated discussion on the sources of societal violence. A theme emerged: political violence--viewed by some as a form of "male aggression"--may best be characterized as a desire for masochistic submission, to fuse with objects conceived as more powerful and more significant than human beings.

Koenigsberg stated that we value war as an opportunity to sacrifice for something greater than the self. Human beings submit to SACRED OBJECTS which endow life with meaning.
Invoking Horace, “It is sweet and honorable to die for one’s country,” Koenigsberg suggested that the sacrificial ideology of war is the “core of Western civilization.”
Sacrificial death functions to establish the reality of the object for which sacrifices are made.
