The essence of both warfare and of Islamic terrorism manifest as a single dynamic, which may be stated as follows: The sacred object is kept alive by feeding this object with the blood and bodies of human beings. One may call the sacred object Allah or Germany or China. The object varies, but the mechanism sustaining the reality of the object remains the same.
Theorists write about the "death wish." But this desire is not the manifestation of a "biological drive." Rather, the wish to generate political death is always bound to a cultural object. One wishes to die oneself (or wants to bring about the death of others) in order to demonstrate one's devotion to a sacred object.
Infidels or enemies, according to this theory, play an identical role as classes of human beings whose existence negates the reality of the sacred object and therefore must be destroyed in order to maintain the reality of the sacred object.

“I soon learned to scent out what was able to lead to fundamentals--and to turn aside from everything else, from the multitude of things that clutter up the mind.”
“A theory is the more impressive the greater the simplicity of its premises, the more different kinds of things it relates, and the more extended its area of applicability.”
